Modern Hi-Fi 101 - A beginners’ guide exploring the Basics of Hi-Fi Setups in 2024

Modern Hi-Fi 101 - A beginners’ guide exploring the Basics of Hi-Fi Setups in 2024

For many of us, investing in a quality home Hi-Fi system has become more challenging than ever in the current world climate. However the desire for a form of escapism or the pure enjoyment of sitting down and immersing yourself in music is still very much prevalent and maybe even more important than before.

Whether it’s winding down after a long day’s work or hosting some friend’s & enjoying memorable albums and having a system that brings out a rich, immersive and captivating sound is the power of a quality Hi-Fi system. Bringing the listener closer to the original performance.

Below I will be discussing the considerations to be had when looking for an up-to-date complete Hi-FI system (without breaking the bank!). If you are just starting your journey in high-fidelity sound and looking at building a complete setup or simply enjoy high quality sound with an outdated system and want to be able to explore the current options with more understanding, this post will hopefully help in some decision making when building your personal audio system without compromising on quality.

DALI Katch G2 - a minimalist marvel.

Dali Katch G2

We don’t keep many portable Bluetooth speakers in stock here at Audio T Oxford; in-fact, there is only one we often recommend... the DALI Katch.

Don’t mistake this as us giving our customers little or no choice, we are just convinced that it is the very best product available, and here is why…

Design

It is a stunning piece of industrial design, modern and stylish and easy to carry (thanks to the inclusion of a soft leather strap) or pack. The build is of the highest quality, with a sturdy metal case housing, where competitors would opt for cheap plastic, not to mention the smart and easy-to-use controls.

Available in three tasteful finishes; Caramel White (my favourite), Chilly Blue and Iron Black. Just looking at it instils a pride of ownership, reinforced by its tactile looks and feel.

Technical Stuff

The Katch measures a compact 138mm x 268 x 47 (H x W x D) and inside this box are no less than six drivers (two tweeters, two mid / bass units and two passive bass units). These are powered by a 2 x 25W digital amplifier. It utilises Bluetooth 5 which allows for APTX and APTX HD/ AAC. A Mini-Jack input is incorporated, as is a USB port, which can also be used as a charger.

Top view with power button

The battery will last for a class leading 30 hours (though this depends on musical content and volume). A full battery charge will take approximately two hours.

The specification claims (considering the compact dimensions) a bass response to 49Hz and a 95dB SPL. I couldn’t actually believe it would go that low, but lo and behold, when I played a 50Hz test tone through it the bass was indeed there. The volume had dropped a little bit but I couldn’t deny that it was indeed making itself felt. I didn’t check the SPL claim, but it certainly goes more than loud enough for the majority of ears.

5O Hz test tone

Sound

Of course, whilst looking good is an advantage, it needs to back this appearance up sonically.

So how does it perform in the real world? The answer is astonishingly well. The DALI allows for either a ‘clean’ or ‘warm’ presentation. I much prefer the ‘clean’. Listening to Shelby Lynne’s gorgeous cover of Dusty Springfields ‘Just a Little Lovin’, the sound is truly engaging and refined.

Moving on to Lou Reeds ‘Walk on the Wild Side’ shows just how good the Katch is rhythmically, it times really well.

Just for a laugh I put on ‘Hey Now’ by London Grammar. If you have ever listened to this track, it has the most stupendous bass; bass that can make some seriously capable systems struggle. This turned out to be most interesting, because rather than hearing the distortion that I expected, the Katch neatly filtered off the very lowest registers and gave an assured, if not quite full range, performance.

Want Stereo?

The DALI also has another trick up its sleeve: if you purchase two of them, you can create a stereo pair: So, for the travelling audiophile or for space-conscious home use, this could be portable Nirvana.

Conclusion

The Katch is at the more expensive end of the compact portable Bluetooth speaker spectrum, but it is most definitely worth the outlay. Prepare to be surprised!

If you are fishing for a high-quality compact Bluetooth speaker, the Katch can be caught (groan) at any Audio T branch.

It’s all about the customer service… A tale from Audio T and Dynaudio.

In our almost 60 year history, Audio T has prided itself on exceptional customer service, both during and after the sale. This is often made easier by the quality of the products we sell and the manufacturers we choose to operate with. Here is a tale of one such example of how a premium manufacturer deals with aftercare, alongside an authorised dealer such as ourselves…

Here at Audio T Oxford, we recently had an enquiry from a gentleman whose father had bought a system from us back in 2003 compromising of a pair of Dynaudio Special 25 Speakers, Cyrus 8/ PSXR amplification, an Arcam CD93 Player, an Arcam tuner and a Denon cassette deck - Remember those?

Now, whilst Dynaudio products have a well founded reputation for being bulletproof, after 20 years of faithful service one of the mid/bass drive units had failed. Our customer, Jimmy, is now 99 years young and still loves his music and in particular, loves these speakers.

Dynaudio Special 25

Jimmy had asked his son Steve to see if he could help get the speaker looked at. Given that the speaker was purchased twenty years ago, Steve thought it best to contact Dynaudio directly. As the original purchase location and authorised dealer, Dynaudio put Steve in touch with ourselves.

So, Steve got in touch to see if we could, if at all possible, get the speaker fixed in time for his father’s 100th birthday! As luck would have it, the Special 25 speakers came with a 25 year warranty, personally signed by the long serving then President of Dynaudio, Wilfried Ehrenholz.

The original certificate of warranty from dynaudio

Steve duly dropped the speaker off for us to test and we confirmed that it was indeed the driver that was fault.

We contacted Bill Livingston, the head of Dynaudio UK about obtaining spares, only to be told that none were left at the factory, but as a manufacturer that are serious about honouring their warranties and given the fact that they build all their own drive units in-house; the conversation went along the lines of “No problem, we can build you new drive units, we keep all the original design drawings and specifications, just give us a couple of weeks and we will make a new pair!

We felt that this was outstanding customer service and a testament to Dynaudio.

Sure enough, two weeks later the brand new mid/bass drivers arrived…

After some careful servicing from yours truly, the driver has now been replaced and the loudspeaker thoroughly soak tested. And it is sounding fantastic, if we do say so ourselves!

Because Steve isn’t local, and only one speaker was brought in to us, we have given him the option of keeping hold of the other drive unit as a spare or we’ll happily fit it in the other speaker, whichever he, or his father prefers.

The story continues…

This is Jimmy (and his son Steve), collecting his Special Forty’s from audio t oxford

Following on from our initial blog, we have since replaced the other drive unit so that both match. While they were here, we took the opportunity to sit and have a play with the speakers and got to chat to Jimmy…

It turns out that Jimmy was an RAF pilot that fought in the Second World War! He flew Spitfires and even survived a crash landing. In 1944, he had to bale out of a burning P40 Kittyhawk. He reagailed that the metal was so hot that he couldn’t move the canopy (the transparent enclosure over the cockpit). He thought he was a goner and prayed for help only to suddenly find himself out of the aeroplane (landing covered in molten metal) and became a POW for the remainder of the war.

He had amazing anecdotes, like a German soldier repairing his clothes for him; which he described as “…a real Christian act when you consider that 45 minutes beforehand he had been strafing them”. Being a prisoner he suffered some real hardships of cold and hunger but some of the guards showed real kindness.

He ended his career flying the interceptor aircraft, English Electric Lightning. Being somewhat of an military aviation geek myself, I could literally have talked to him for hours. Jimmy has a short book written about his exploits. I might just have to track it down for myself.

We would like to take this opportunity to wish Jimmy a very happy 100th birthday!

Thanks for reading.

Dispelling the myth around affordable speakers with the DALI Oberon - King of the Fair(l)y Priced Speakers.

As many of you will know by now, I thoroughly enjoy experimenting with a variety of Hi-Fi gear to gauge what equipment will produce the most detail from my favourite music. From CD players and turntables, to amplifiers and speakers, it’s an ongoing investigation that, let’s face it, may never end as most brands are almost constantly releasing new and upgraded models. Working at Audio T has really opened my eyes to expansive world of Hi-Fi and the amount of brands and models available.

Hopefully, this article will dispel the myth that you have to break the bank in order to own a great set of Hi-Fi speakers as we’ll be exploring the subject by looking at a beautiful pair of floor standing speakers that perform well beyond their price point – the DALI Oberon 5.

A COLOUR FOR EVERY INTERIOR

The DALI Oberon 5 come in a range of finishes – Light Oak, White, Dark Walnut, and Black Ash. Mountain Grey grilles are supplied with the lighter finishes and Shadow Black grilles with the darker; Marshmallow White is also available at an extra cost. Standing at 83cm high, 16cm wide and 28cm deep, their striking beauty frequently catches the attention of customers when they enter the store, giving us many great opportunities to tell the customers how well they perform. Most of the time they intrigue customers enough to sit down and have a listen in our demonstration room, and are often pleasantly surprised by how beautiful these speakers sound and perform considering their fairly reasonable price mark. In fact, most customers can’t believe their luck when they discover these incredible floorstanders.

We currently have a Light Oak pair on display in store, and they are regularly used as a “go-to” for demonstrating moderately priced CD players, turntables, etc. The Oberon 5 produce crisp detail that isn’t harsh or overwhelming to the ears, making them a good all-rounder for any source.

The Dali Oberon 5s in Light Oak

One of the first things I noticed about the Oberon 5 was how light they felt when setting them up. There is often a misconception that heavy speakers make for a better sound, but this isn’t always the case… Developments in materials and manufacturing over the decades has meant that speaker cabinets can be less weighty and their drivers often have lighter neodymium magnets which allows the cone to move faster through their higher magnetic properties, giving the speaker a more detailed sound. It wasn’t until I really took the time to listen to them critically that I appreciated that although they may feel light in weight, they are full-bodied in sound.

It was at this point I realised that I hadn’t even thought of their monetary value. So when I confirmed the price, I couldn’t believe what I was seeing given the experience I just had from them. “Surely they must be more expensive, they sound excellent!”. Some might think that because of their modest price-point that they are of lesser quality, but in fact, the award winning Oberon series are DALI’s intermediate range, sitting above the entry level Spektors. After I learned all of this, the DALI Oberon 5 became something I often recommended and demonstrated to customers who came in to store with a certain price bracket in mind.

These superb floorstanders are right up there with the best
— What Hi-Fi? Magazine

TIME TO LISTEN

So for today’s listening session, I hooked the speakers up with the Rega Planar 3, AT-VM95ML cartridge and the Arcam SA20 amplifier. I popped on the Michael Jackson 1987 record “Bad” and away it spun. The beauty of vinyl is the way it re-produces the precision and detail of original recordings, which is complimented by the Oberon 5s. For me, there’s nothing like the needle hitting the record and that moment of analogue silence just before the music kicks in.

I didn’t need to listen for long to be truly moved by what I was hearing. The bass was tight, the drums were crisp and you could hear the sound of guitar strings being plucked as well as the notes they were producing. Aside from the detail, the music had so much presence and soul. Being an avid audiophile, when listening to music I want it to sound as close to the recording session as possible, and these speakers did just that. The ambience created by the DALI Oberon 5 is unparalleled for its price-point, not to mention the fact that they are very easy on the eye!

CONCLUSION

It’s safe to say from the tone of this article that I’ve been a fan from the beginning, but it’s important to summarise that all the key features of these speakers truly dispel the myth around affordable speakers, and you can get great quality at an affordable price.

A closer look at the award winning Bowers & Wilkins 607 S2 Anniversary Edition

Offering power and scale that belies its compact form, the 607 S2 Anniversary Edition features the Continuum™ cone and updated crossovers to ensure exceptional resolution and musicality. Ideal for stereo Hi-Fi or Home Cinema surround sound use. These beautifully built, compact, standmount loudspeakers, represent the starting point of Bowers and Wilkins ownership.

Ideal for smaller spaces, the 607 S2 Anniversary Edition uncovers incredible insight and dynamism in your music. Using the same game-changing technologies as its siblings, 607 S2 Anniversary Edition is perfect for enjoying your music or providing surround sound as part of a home theatre system.

Available in three finishes; black, white and oak, they’re sure to look the part in any home!

So what do we think?

One of the biggest changes between the current version and its predecessor was introduced by B&W a year or so ago, and came in the form of moving away from a Kevlar to Continuum mid/ bass drivers. “But what does this actually mean?”, Well, S2 Anniversary as a whole are less coloured and more lively. Personally, here at Audio T Oxford, we are big fans of these newer ranges, be they 600, 700 and 800 series.

Listening through a Rega Elex R amplifier and using a Naim NDX as a source, we started out by playing Rob Wasserman’s “Ballad of the Runaway Horse”.
This is an excellent track for assessing Hi-Fi: The double bass was taught and controlled, whilst Jennifer Warne’s voice, was clear and powerful, lacking the edginess that some metal dome speakers can exhibit. Having said that, if a customer’s room was more on the ‘lively’ side, I would possibly be tempted to recommend a slightly warmer sounding speaker. However, for more typical rooms, especially if on the more compact side of average, these speakers would be ideal. But as we all know, no two listening spaces are the same, so we cater the best systems for your room based on our expert knowledge. So don’t hesitate to Contact Us if you have any queries.

After going through some of our usual evaluation tracks, we relaxed, chose some our favourite tunes, put the kettle on, and just had fun, because if these speakers are anything, then that anything is fun!

Voices and instruments are delivered with purity and precision. Something that is no doubt aided by the Continuum cone, as found in Bowers & Wilkins flagship 800 Series. Once reserved only for their most revered models, Continuum brings you a cleaner and more accurate performance over the previously mentioned Kevlar material.

At the moment, these represent even better value for money, because at Audio T, we are currently selling the Bowers & Wilkins 607 S2 Anniversary Edition for £399, with a saving of £100!*

If you would like to hear these great sounding speakers, then please do not hesitate to get in touch.

Cyrus Audio

Cyrus Hark rack and Stereo 200

Starting with Cyrus Audio we know they have played a big part in the British Hifi industry. Going back to the start, Cyrus was part of the Mission speaker brand which was founded by Farad Azima. Moving forward through the early 80s came the birth of the first Cyrus one amplifier which took the industry by storm. By 2005 the Mission speaker company and Cyrus parted ways and Cyrus Audio was born. Now nearly a century later we have the amazing XR range which we will have at our event.

Cyrus XR range

REL Acoustics

T7x rear with Hi-level connection

Now on to REL acoustics. REL was founded in 1990 by Richard Edmund Lord however the company we know today was born in 2005 with John Hunter and Donald Brody heading it up. Since 1990 one of the keys to the evolution of their subwoofer design has been the high level input, which is still seen today in their subwoofers. Moving forward to 2005 onwards, the new ownership came with fresh ideas from Silicon Valley engineering, producing more power and better performance with natural sound filtering, but it doesn’t stop at the electronics level. REL use musical instrument grade bracing on their cabinets giving you that controlled bass and detail we all desire. So, whether you're looking at the HT series or right up to the reference series you’ll have great performance detail and bass. We will have a selection of REL subwoofers on show and on demonstration at our event.

REL T7x white front drive unit

Spendor Loudspeakers

Spendor A4 white rear terminals

Last but not least of course SPENDOR Audio. So, what do we know about Spendor. Spendor was founded in the late 1960s by Spencer and Dorothy Hughes (Not just a clever anagram in the company name) working in BBC’s engineering department they came up with the iconic BC1 which was a big game changer, not only in the studio but in the Hifi community. Almost 50 years later the BC1 and its successors have been heard with their distinctive sound that truly captivates you. The same can be applied for their modern ranges from the classic series to A series right through to D series they still maintain that amazing sound we love. We will have a great selection of Spendor speakers on demonstration at our show, so you will have the chance to see and hear why we love them.

Join us for our Show Weekend Event…

Spendor A7 oak solid base with logo

So on both the Friday the 25th and Saturday 26th February the main demo room will be home to the following system for timed demonstrations by Cyrus Audio and REL. The New Cyrus XR range including the CDT XR, PRE XR and MONO X300 power amplifiers driving Spendor D9.2 all underpinned by 2 REL Carbon Special subwoofers as a stereo pair. This reference level setup will blow your socks off.

In our second smaller demo room we will have all the 7s. A more affordable system on show here that will include Cyrus CDi XR, Cyrus i7 XR teamed with Spendor A7 loudspeakers and a single REL T7X.

As we usually do at the Bristol show there will be show discounts on selected products. We will also be running a prize draw with the chance to win a pair of Cyrus Soundbuds 2 wireless earbuds.

Brighton's Linn Klinik featuring new Karousel bearing - 8th October 2020

We’re very excited for our upcoming Linn Klinik event showcasing their new LP12 bearing, the Karousel! John has been very busy the last couple of months fitting Karousels to many of our customer’s decks, and the orders are still flooding in. The great thing about the Linn Klinik is that it gives customers an opportunity to hear what the Karousel does with their own ears, instead of relying solely on reviews and recommendations.

We thought we would take this opportunity to tell you what systems we will be playing on the day.

Our ‘Karouseled’ Majik LP12!

Our ‘Karouseled’ Majik LP12!

The first system we’ll be using will be a full Linn Majik system. Comprising of a Majik LP12 - with Karousel bearing - into either a new Majik DSM or a Selekt DSM (depending on availability), playing through Linn’s own Majik 140 floor-standing speakers. We’ve been running this one on and off for the last few weeks in preparation and it sounds excellent. It’s very sweet, detailed and clear, without being too aggressive. It’s very easy to listen to without fatiguing your ears.

the klimax lp12, with radikal lurking in the background!

the klimax lp12, with radikal lurking in the background!

The next system we’ll be using is a higher end system. We built this system based on some of the most popular combinations our customers use with this level of LP12. This one is a Klimax LP12, it has a Karousel, an internal Urika phono stage and is being powered by the Linn Radikal (Klimax enclosure) which powers both the deck and the Urika - a ‘doubly impressive upgrade’ as Linn say! This then going through a Naim NAC552 & NAP300 combination and into a pair of ATC SCM50s. This is a very impressive sounding system and really makes the Karousel shine!

Linn are also running a promotional offer for the day, if you spend £3000 or more on any Linn product*, you get the Karousel bearing for free. So, if you’ve been thinking about finally going for that Radikal upgrade, now might be the time.

*Excluding Kandid Cartridge

We do recommend that everyone who is coming to listen brings a selection of their own records, and advise that they be records you know well, so you can really hear the differences the Karousel makes. We do carry a selection of records for demo purposes, but as we all know, each pressing is different!

Each booked appointment will last around 45-60 minutes, and we will be able to answer any questions, as well as provide recommendations about upgrades to your own system. You can book your slot in Brighton by clicking here

Below is a list of the available dates for all other participating Audio-T stores. Contact your nearest branch to get more details about booking.

Acoustic Energy AE300 Series Arrives At Audio T Cardiff

With a gap in our shelves we set out on the hunt for a new pair of speakers to fill out our repertoire…

IMG_0005.jpg

After reading and hearing glowing reviews of Acoustic Energy loudspeakers, we thought we’d have a listen to their AE309s that they kindly brought down for demonstration. The design is elegant, simple and most importantly sounds great, we were sold from a single listening session and had them on order immediately. The delivery times were brilliant and we had them on our hands right away, a pair of AE309s and AE300s both in walnut.

As metal domed speakers go I am usually a skeptic but Acoustic Energy now have me convinced that it can be done right with their aluminum domed tweeters.

As metal domed speakers go I am usually a skeptic but Acoustic Energy now have me convinced that it can be done right with their aluminum domed tweeters.

There was still some of the sibilance that I attributed to the metal cones but as they wore in and when I replaced the NACA5 speaker cable with Chord it disappeared and became incredibly musical. What worries I had were simply washed away with the depth of bass and clarity of treble, I find myself quite literally hearing detail I have never before heard. I have to sometimes remind myself that these are a £1100 speaker and to stop comparing them to others way above their price range!

IMG_0010.JPG

They have a forward sound much like Bowers & Wilkins, so if that doesn’t appeal to you then I would suggest listening to Dali or Spendor as an alternative. In comparing them to other metal dome loudspeakers in a similar price range, I’m surprised to find that I prefer the AE309s in many ways, they are great value for money for their size and are far less fussy about placement.

image.jpg

The Acoustic Energy 300 series have a few quirks that make them interesting, a rectangular rear port which reduces the affect of the rear wall (we had our placed about 30cm away), opposing rounded edges to reduce the number of veneer sheets used and a bottom weighted cabinet to improve stability and cabinet resonance. The 300s come paired with their own stands with a stylistic walnut stripe down the front and a solid design.

IMG_0007.JPG

If any of my waffle resonates with you then feel free to come down to our Cardiff store and try them for yourself! They are a very refreshing take on the ‘modern’ speaker sound that might convince even the most old school of Hi-Fi enthusiasts.

Thanks for reading, Hefin, Nick and Kerrin.

New Flagship Acoustic Energy AE500 Series Loudspeakers At Audio T Bristol

This is not some "Holier than thou" new composite Unobtanium, forged in Mordor creation. This is a speaker that elevates performances in a really engaging way.

8D51FC8C-4AD2-4DB1-B24C-77AAECE15381.JPEG

Based in Cirencester in the Cotswolds, Acoustic Energy have been around for over 30 years and are highly respected in the professional music industry, producing the highly regarded AE 1 Active and renowned by the Hi-Fi press for the original AE 100. They always seem to make a speaker that punches above it’s weight, puts a smile on your face and yet looks and feels very unstated.

The new AE500 series continues the tradition, currently comprises two models, AE500 standmount and the AE509 floor-stander. Both feature the brand new 25mm dome tweeter and 125mm mid/bass drivers with carbon fibre cone.

Until the end of December Acoustic Energy are offering 25% OFF a new pair of AE 100 / 300 or 500 series when you trade in your old loudspeakers.

AD8A3C30-134D-44A5-945D-BF11CF5210CE.JPEG

Everything from the ground up has been redesigned to work with the new carbon fibre cones - beautiful woven to be stronger, lighter and faster responding to acoustic load than aluminium or paper. The lens surround of all the drivers has been redesigned and are closer together to cast a 170 degree even sound dispersion, most noticeable on the tweeter lens, softly embedded in the cabinet.

Talking of cabinets, the finish comes in Piano Gloss White, Piano Gloss Black and American Walnut veneer with three of the twelve edges with a bevelled curved edge. Personally, I prefer the rustic feel of the walnut wood, which also suits the slim cabinet design . Acoustically, this is the same cabinet construction as their reference series using new Resonance Suppression Composite to reduce cabinet acoustic sound radiation.

The rear firing bass slot, I found is a lot faster, direct sounding with low frequencies being less breathy. The slot design seems to be less sensitive to wall proximity, which increases the speakers placement possibilities.

The internal tuning of the floorstanders is a whittling craft of baffle placement and internally machined port. Lots of loudspeaker manufacturers prefer to handle issues of internal cabinet resonance by manipulating crossover frequencies. AE prefers to keep the crossover neutral at around 4kHz. The standing wave frequency resonances are handled by a hole in the mid-placed horizontal baffle that is tuned by altering the diameter, micrometre by micrometre until a standing wave cancels out the cabinet resonance.

The floorstanders come with these elegantly machined plates with spikes making fine adjustments to positioning easier than the usual mounting underneath. This also means that the speaker has a lower centre of gravity and feels better grounded for its slim design.

For testing, we connected the 500s to Naim's new Supernait 3 using Naim's NDX5 for streaming Qobuz (Audio T Bristol playlistl) content. I suspected that this combination would sound overly bright with squeaky clean dynamics - a clinical examination resulting in a Coroner’s report that the Music died of unnatural causes!

I couldn’t have been more wrong. These speakers are exquisite sounding. Regardless of genre, this series has an uncanny ability of producing a clean, dynamic sound, effortless stereo sound stage and an engaging listen without being overly detailed or fatiguing. Female vocals soar, orchestral classical pieces a new level of detail and very involving performance.

Head to Audio T Bristol and audition the AE500 or AE509. Until the end of December Acoustic Energy are offering 25% OFF a new pair of AE 100 / 300 or 500 series when you trade in your old loudspeakers.

It's Time To Take A Stand On Isolation! Let’s Have A Look At What IsoAcoustics Have To Offer.

One of the more commonly heard statements that leaves the lips of our loyal customers when discussing their Hi-Fi is “I’m happy with my speakers, but…”

Now, many people may think that the next step might be to look at changing the amplifier, the sound source or perhaps adding a subwoofer to improve things. Whilst these are all good options, they’re not the only ones to consider…

Whether you’re rocking a pair of mighty floor standers or the humble bookshelf equivalent, there is something to be gained from the inclusion of an isolation solution, and luckily for you, IsoAcoustics have got lots of options for you to consider.

Since 2012, IsoAcoustics have been at the forefront of acoustic isolation solutions, working at improving the sound quality within professional audio market (recording and production studios) and for the consumer home audio market.

So what do they do? Well, if you were to assume that the implementation of an isolation stand would give you tighter bass response, then you would be correct! But, it might shock you to know that they also greatly improve the upper-mid frequency response to give you a noticeably enhanced clarity and openness.

Don’t believe me? Why don’t you contact your local store to book a demonstration? Let’s have a look at the range….

The GAIA Series

Available in three different sizes to ensure the best fit for your speakers - GAIA I, II and III

Available in three different sizes to ensure the best fit for your speakers - GAIA I, II and III

Designed to replace the existing spike or rubber foot of your floor standing speakers, the GAIA are a carefully engineered master-stroke. The patented design allows the speaker to resist lateral movement and oscillations whilst maintaining alignment with the ideal listening position. Any internal reflections from the hard supporting surface are attenuated resulting in greater sound clarity and openness. You can read more on the GAIA series as well as watch some original videos here.

Three GAIA models tuned and optimized for each weight range

Three GAIA models tuned and optimized for each weight range

“When a speaker is placed on a hard surface, secondary internal reflections result. Any artifacts of this smear found in the stereo image is perceived to be in the center, causing the sound stage to collapse. The GAIA series of isolators eliminates this smear resulting in a larger 3-dimensional sound stage.”

The Aperta Series

Available in a modern aluminium finish or classic black, as well as three different sizes, the Aperta is the best option for any bookshelf speakers whether they sit on a stylish living room sideboard or dedicated speaker stands. Not only do these patent designs give you the separation and acoustic isolation you’d expect from a bespoke stand, but they also allow you to adjust and angle the speakers to ensure that you are firing the sound to the best listening position possible. The patented IsoAcoustics isolation stand Aperta, which means ‘open’ in Italian, allows the speakers to float, eliminating reflections from being conducted back into the structure that create bass smear and resulting in a lack of clarity and openness. Trust me, you will hear the difference immediately.

aperta-dimensions.jpg

Which option is best for me?

The fine folk at IsoAcoustics have even created a handy calculator for you to see what is the best choice of isolation for your speakers here.

But, “Brad! I’ve already isolated my speakers. Is there anything else you can show me from IsoAcoustics?” I hear you cry! Well, luckily for you, the answer is yes. Perhaps you want to up your isolation game on your audio components or turntable? Well then you should look at the stylish Orea Series. “But Brad, my turntable is my pride and joy! I love it more than I could have ever thought! Is there anything dedicated for it that is better than the sleek Orea?” - Never fear, IsoAcoustics have you covered yet again! They say that no man is an island, but they didn’t say anything about your turntable. Feast your eyes on the aptly named Delos - The Floating Island. I think it is safe to say that these products are so mammoth that they need a blog dedicated just to them… Perhaps next month we’ll have something for you… Stay tuned to find out!

In the meantime be sure to follow the Portsmouth store on Instagram and Facebook for more original content, and don’t be afraid to message us with your suggestions and comments.

IsoAcoustics isolation products are available from all branches of Audio T and are available to buy online. You can also ask to try them out in your own system before you buy, using our home loan service. Call or ask in store for details.

A System Mixed To Perfection! PMC twenty5 23, Naim Supernait 3 & Project Extension 9

Having worked in audio production in the past, I have always had a thirst for absolute precision and control in a music system and with that in mind I went out to set up a Hi-Fi system that would happily suit a sound engineer or a home audio enthusiast!

Starting with the delectable PMC Twenty5 23s

Starting with the delectable PMC Twenty5 23s

Going for that “studio sound” the PMC Twenty5 23s are the natural choice with superb dynamic range and clarity. Being transmission line and with their famous studio heritage , provide particularly ‘flat’ frequency response that I find refreshing and familiar, but with a loud and proud immersive listening experience that you wouldn’t achieve from a studio monitor. Simply put, they offer the best of both worlds, giving benefits from a true Hi-FI speaker and a studio monitor.

I knew the new Naim Supernait 3 was a perfect match for the PMCs the moment I put them together!

I knew the new Naim Supernait 3 was a perfect match for the PMCs the moment I put them together!

The control of the new Naim Supernait 3 keeps the PMC’s perfectly in check delivering beautiful low end stability that stunned me when I played ‘2049’ from the Hans Zimmer Blade Runner Soundtrack. The depth and spacing of the track was incredible and something that I hadn’t even heard in the cinema when it was first released in 2017.

Project Extension 9 with moving coil Quitet Black Cartidge

Project Extension 9 with moving coil Quitet Black Cartidge

Bringing the heart into the system is the Project Extension 9 Superpack turntable that comes with the Ortofon Quintet Black cartridge and to back it up the GoldNote PH10 phono stage. When I first assembled this turntable for our display it felt like engineering perfected. It comes with three feet matched and labeled for each thread to make a perfect fit and four counterweights to give you a huge range of cartridge choices. The sheer weight and stability of the turntable leaves nothing to be desired.

What this all results in is me feeling giddy as a child to listen to music again (and spending far too much time in the demonstration rooms than I ought to). I think I’ve just decided to start saving so I can have this very system at home…

Bowers & Wilkins Loudspeakers Are Back At Audio T Cheltenham! Trade Up & Save Up To £600

We’re excited and delighted to announce that we are now stocking both the 600 and 700 Series loudspeakers from legendary speaker designers Bowers & Wilkins.

Both of these ranges use the innovative Continuum bass/mid-range cone technology that has been developed over an eight year period and first featured in the flagship 800 Series Diamond models. This drive unit material is very thin, very light and very stiff which means it can deliver a pure and precise soundscape that will allow you to enjoy all the layers of your favourite music.

The B&W 600 Series uses the latest generation refined and upgraded version of the Decoupled Double Dome tweeter to reveal pristine detail.

SDC11864.JPG

We now have in store for demonstration the 603 floorstanders and the 606 and 607 smaller standmount models.

SDC11863.jpg

The 600 series offers a lot of loudspeaker for not a lot of money. They are also very easy to drive as well so will suit a wide variety of amplifiers.

SDC11862.jpg

The jump up from the B&W 600 series takes you to (surprise surprise) the B&W 700 Series and good though the 600 Series speakers are this is where things get really special. A wealth of state of the art technologies all add up to make the 700 Series truly magical. The 700 Series flagship floorstander the 702s2 and the 705s2 which is the top performing standmount in the range both boast the use of a solid body Carbon Dome tweeter housing, sitting in a pod on top of the cabinet. This is milled from a solid block of aluminium and provides an acoustically optimised housing for the tweeter that is exceptionally inert and resistant to resonances, which translates into clearer and cleaner sound overall and improved sound quality.

SDC11870.JPG

All of the B&W 700 Series use purpose built Carbon Dome tweeters to raise the breakup threshold to 47kHz which is well outside the range of dog hearing let alone humans. This enables the speaker to deliver pinpoint imaging and amazing accuracy of detail.

SDC11866.JPG

There are soooooooo many technological innovations across these two ranges that it would take too long to write about them all here and it would get way too boring, but many improvements is technology that has trickled down from the flagship B&W 800 series, which are hailed as one of the best sounding loudspeakers in the world! Suffice to say both the 600 and 700 Series are a triumph of design and technology and a real delight to listen to. We have been getting wonderful results matching them up with Rega CD players and amplifiers which are a beautiful match for them giving a huge soundstage with great imaging and super fast timing with great deep and tight bass too.

SDC11867.JPG

Here’s the best bit…. right now and for a limited time only, B&W are inviting you to take part in their exclusive “Trade Up To Bowers And Wilkins 700 Series” sales promotion.

All you have to do is bring in any old pair of speakers in any condition, working or not and you will get £600 OFF 702 s2, £450 OFF 703s2, £350 OFF 704s2, £300 OFF 705s2, £200 OFF 706s2, and £150 OFF 707s2. Of course if your speakers are worth more than the value quoted above then we will give you more for them. Just contact us first for a quote. This offer ends on November 30th so be quick!

Spendor A2. Good Things Really Do Come In Small Packages.

If your listening room is limiting your speaker choices and a floorstanding speaker seems to be out of the question, then Spendor may just have the ideal speaker for you.

The A2, is a perfectly formed yet supremely compact floorstanding speaker that takes up less space than many bookshelf speakers!

Spendor Pictures 1.jpg

Priced at £1675 a pair, the A2 offers a real alternative to the plethora of quality stand mounted speakers available at this price point. With lovely clean, straight lines, a super compact footprint and a range of real wood veneer finishes, that include a traditional Black Ash, a Dark Walnut or a Natural Oak, the A2 not only looks good, it also sounds superb; but more on that in a moment. Standing a little over 2.5 feet tall the Spendor A2 is just 15cm wide and only 25cm deep, diminutive to say the least and as they are so compact this speaker is incredibly easy to integrate into your listening room.

By coincidence, our demonstration pair arrived a matter of days before we received our new Naim Supernait 3, so it seemed like the perfect opportunity to run these two in together. Consequently we have been enjoying this peppy combination for the past two weeks, coupled with the Naim ND5 XS streamer as our primary source.

Spendor Pics 1.jpg

While the A2’s clearly are compact, it is clear from the first few notes of any song you select, the sound they produce is anything but small. As we have established with both the Spendor A4's and A7's, the drive-units integrate seamlessly and the A2's paint a big-audio-picture. While the soundstage produced is of the wide-screen variety, the A2’s compact dimensions mean that the low frequency drive unit isn’t very large;. in fact, it is the same drive unit that is specified for the A1 bookshelf speaker, measuring 150mm or 5.9 inch's. It stands to reason then that a driver of this size won't push that much air, particularly given the A2's cabinet size, but the beauty of such a small speaker is it requires less space around it to perform well, and most importantly, less space behind it. Using the rear wall to reinforce the bass output ensures that the A2 doesn't leave you feeling short-changed in any way, shape or form. When critically listening I played a range of Burial tracks, Sbtrkt's Pharaohs and even James Blake's, Limit to your Love, all of which were deliberately selected to get a sense of the depth of bass these little speakers can produce. And honestly, the results were outstanding. While it’s fair to say that the low frequencies aren't necessarily earth-shattering, what the A2's do deliver is a taut, tuneful and nuanced bassline with a sense of realism, nothing is overblown here but distinguishing between a bass guitar or electronic bassline is an easy task; no muddling, nothing is indistinct. Still, if you like your bass to go just a little deeper, a suitable subwoofer will fill in the missing elements below the 36hz the speakers are capable of delivering;  and of course, if your room is a little larger the Spendor A4 and A7 are ready, willing and able for a small increase in price!

Obviously the system we have been running them with is far from an entry level pairing, but we have often found the other Spendor's in the range exhibit an unfussy nature, tending to work well with any brand of electronics we choose. So we thought we might match them with Rotel’s new amplifier, the A11. Priced at £450, it delivers 50 watts of class A/B power, into an 8 ohms load, which is more than sufficient current to control the reasonably sensitive A2's and to cut a long story short, they pair beautifully, with the baby Spendor's delivering a lovely, rounded and mature sound despite the mismatch in the respective prices point of these two products.

Spendor+Pics+4.jpg

We think the Spendor A2's are a superb speaker, definitely worthy of an audition. If you happen to be passing by, there a strong chance they will be playing in the background or alternatively, please contact the Swindon team and we will be happy to arrange a proper demonstration for you. Call Andy or Andrew at Audio T Swindon on 01793 538222, or just pop in and we would be very pleased to set them up for you.

More New Loudspeakers from Cirencester's Finest! Acoustic Energy AE509

This blog is really a follow on and update from the last we posted from in the Cheltenham branch. That last blog was based upon the new Acoustic Energy AE 500 stand mount loudspeakers and now we have the even newer AE509 floorstanding speakers.

SDC11810.JPG

Again using the new carbon fibre drive units designed to improve upon transient speed and clarity and to reduce distortion. They also have the same type of cabinet construction using Acoustic Energy’s new 18mm Resonance Suppression Composite (RSC) which is evolved from the famous Reference Series and is designed to reduce cabinet acoustic radiation which otherwise can cause cabinet colourations. Essentially it is a very clever method of building one cabinet around another one with a layer of damping in between. This makes the cabinet more inert so when you are listening to them the cabinets just disappear and you are left with the stereo image of the performance just hanging in the air in front of you.

SDC11811.JPG

Of course the main area of improvement over the already rather nifty sound produced by the little AE500 is in the bottom end. The bass on the AE500 goes down to a pretty decent (for the size of the box) 45hz whereas the AE509 digs out a much more respectable 32hz. After trying out a wide variety of music types I thought I would really put them through their paces by playing the fairly new album by a band called Lump. Lump is a wonderful collaboration between Laura Marling (vocals, flute and words) and mike Lindsay (Guitars, bass, rhythms, juno, pocket piano, lamba, drones, and textures) from a band called Tunng.

Lump.jpg

This album has truly seismic levels of bass at times and playing the track Late To The Flight produced beautifully articulated deep bass that was also clean and tight. The word that crossed my mind was “grunt”! Something that not many speakers at this price are remotely capable of. The really clever thing is that this bass does not colour or confuse the mid-range at all which remains clean and open at all times with some great stereo imaging to boot.

S Hackett.jpg

Next on my playlist was The Total Experience Live In Liverpool by Steve Hackett from which I played the track The Musical Box. This is an old Genesis song that gets somewhat of a re-working. Another piece of music that at times has spectacular levels of bass that the AE509’s just sail through.

Another thing I really like about these speakers is the gorgeous metal bases with proper chunky spikes. Most speakers these days treat the spikes as just a cheap add on and they don’t give you a great method of making sure your speaker does not wobble around whereas the Acoustic Energy base and spikes looks amazing, really works, and makes set up easy as well.

SDC11813.jpg

If you are interested in getting a listen to these amazing new speakers give us a call in the Cheltenham store and speak to Jon, Farid or Andy. Tea and/or coffee will be laid on …. there may even be some biscuits left!
