Arcam AVR450 & BDP300

A little while ago I wrote a blog on the fantastic new Arcam AVR750, now I'm following up with the smaller brother, the new AVR450. The AVR450 is £2200 which makes it far more attainable than the 750, and yet it still retains most of the features.

I chose to use the excellent Arcam BDP300 blu ray player with the AVR450 when I listened to them. With Arcam offering a £400 trade in on the BDP300 until 30th November 2013 it seemed the perfect time to see how good £2800 of home cinema electronics can be.

So how good are they? Stunningly good is the answer. Most people that buy Arcam home cinema equipment do so because the stereo sound for music is great. This combination is remarkably good with music. I listened to two different premium brand stereo hi-fi systems as a comparison, and the Arcam combo more than held its own, which for home cinema electronics is a hugely impressive acheivement. The Arcam sounded dynamic, detailed, and musical with everything I threw at it.

Home cinema was also handled brilliantly, as you might expect. Picture was pin sharp and vibrant, the sound was powerful and dynamic whilst still retaining the subtlety. My only concern is that the AVR450 is a little too good! It comes pretty close to the performance of the £4000 AVR750 for a lot less money. So if you are in the market for some top quality home cinema electronics I would definately recommend giving the Arcam combo a listen.

Sennheiser Meets Chromey Meets Orpheus At IFA Berlin.

As we were in the land of Sennheiser, we thought we would pop in for a brew and a bratwurst.

The Sennheiser Momentum-On in Pink. Now matching the new iPhone 5C.

The Sennheiser Momentum-On in Green, also matching the new iPhone 5C.

The Momentums were causing quite a stir amongst the public. With colour being the theme of the day at Sennheiser, the public had a chance to listen to a pair of Momentum-Ons and have their portrait done (in colour) all courtesy of Sennheiser.

Check out the full range of colours here.

Just when we thought we'd seen it all...we spotted this. Yep!! thats a Sennheiser Orpheus HEV90 headphone amp you are looking at below.

This legendary beast is the stuff of folklore as far as headphones amps are concerned. This beauty isn't available anymore but it can still wow the headphone enthusiasts in a crowd.

Cue a series of photos with Chromey and the mighty Orpheus.

A quote from Stereophile magazine "If looks could kill the Orpheus would be deadly" how true.

Careful Chromey, you know there were only ever 300 Orpheus amps produced back in 1991 and they now change hands for almost twice the original price.

The six visible vacuum tubes covered with shiny tube shields make it look like something out of a Star Wars movie. Well thats what Chromey tells me.

 You can call me Hal.

The red LED pulses gently until the amp reaches optimum running temperature...and then...musical heaven!!

Now just in case you are wondering why there are no headphones visible in these shots, specifically the HE90s,  well thats because they were being used by a gentleman just out of shot and I didn't want to disturb him or use him in the blog without his permission. So maybe the next time we get close to the Orpheus I'll snap some shots for you.

Cue more shots with Chromey and the king of headphone amps.

Just to to let you know, we are a Club Orpheus dealer and we have the latest Sennheiser HD800, HD700 and the HDVD800 headphone amp on demonstration at our Manchester store.

Now, the delectable Orpheus may have been the king of old but theres a new master in town.

The Sennheiser HDVD 800. Always on, and ready to dem at our Manchester store.

Thanks for stopping by.

Roll The Credits! Audio T Southampton The Movie Is Now On General Release

Fresh from the editing suite 'Audio T Southampton The Movie' has now had it's world premiere and is available for all to view here and on our store page.

We would like to extend our thanks to local marketing and design agency bandv for being so generous with their time and expertise, without which our store video would have been a far more amateur affair.

Special thanks go to Phil Le Cheminant who single handedly directed, filmed, produced and edited the video.

Credit also to Phil Sayer for providing a professional voice over, and to Sarah Harley and Richard Neale for their starring roles as our customers.

Many thanks to everyone involved.

Now you've seen the movie do come and see us on location soon!

Audio T & Sony Go To IFA Berlin.

As many of you may already know, one of the worlds largest consumer electronics shows took place in Berlin,Germany. Sony very kindly offered to take myself (Munir) and Gavin from our Manchester and Preston stores to the Sony stand at IFA Berlin.

We were shown a range of high end hifi products from Sony's now legendary ES range and the latest 4K home cinema projectors and TV's from Sony.

Here's a quick diary of our day at the show.

We arrived at Hall 4.2 on Monday morning at 9.30am...

...and were promptly whisked away to the inner sanctum.

Eric Kingdon from Sony UK was on hand to give us a brief overview of the upcoming delights from Sony.

Starting with reference speakers from Sony.

The SS-NA2ES from Sony use custom designed drive units made by Scan-Speak.

Sony's innovative I-Array tweeter system.

Superlative design and cracking build quality is used in the cabinet design.

Thats birch ply-wood.

The baffle on the SS-NA2ES cabinet is made of Scandinavian birch ply-wood.

The new range of ES Hifi streaming products certainly caught our attention.

The HAP-Z1ES – HDD Audio Player and the TA-A1ES 2 channel amplifier.

The TA-A1ES is the first 2-channel analogue amp Sony has developed since the TA-FA777ES, 14 years ago.

The decision was taken to create an analogue 2-channel separate amp (not digital) in order to provide the best sound quality possible.

Here's a quick rundown on the specifications

Push-pull type amplifier

Speaker output – 80w + 80w (1 system)

Equipped with discreet headphone amp (impedance selectable)

Lo: 8Ω and Mid:150Ω 500mW + 500mW

Hi: 3 00Ω 250mW + 250mW

Size: 430 x 420 x 115mm

Weight 17Kg

I quite like the size of those binding posts, easily accommodating chunky speaker cable like the Chord Epic or Chord Sarum.

All controlled from a beautifully sleek remote.

The HAP-Z1ES from Sony has a range of extra features which establish the device as the highest quality audio player made by Sony.

Music that is stored on a PC can be copied over the network onto the integrated 1TB HDD (this HDD is expandable via a USB socket on the back of the product). It can be controlled with a free app for Android or iOS.

The HAP-Z1ES includes the unique Sony technology ‘DSD Re-mastering Engine’ this technology upscales all standard music files (MP3, AAC, WMV) into DSD files. This results in stunning Hi-Res Audio quality from your entire music collection.

It includes a digital-to-analogue converter (analogue FIR filter) to reduce high frequency noise in DSD signals. FIR filters are ideal for D/A conversion of DSD signals.

The Sony HAP-S1 all in one network player seems to tick all the right boxes.

With ES build quality thrown in, this product could seriously mix it up with other high end brands.

Here's a quick overview of the specs.

Built-in 40W x 2 Analogue Amplifier

High Quality D/A Converter

Will playback,DSD (DSF, DSDIFF), LPCM(WAV,AIFF), FLAC, ALAC, ATRAC Advanced Lossless, ATRAC, MP3, AAC, WMA music file decode

“HAP music transfer” free app (Win/Mac)

Built-in WiFi

Built-in 500GB HDD (expandable via USB port at rear of product)

vTuner

Opt in x1, Coax in x1, Analogue RCA in x 2

RCA analogue out x1, Headphone x1

Ethernet x1

“HDD Audio Remote” free App (Android/iOS)

And now into the wonderful world of 4K.

The amazing 4K 84 inch  KD-84X9005.

The new FDR-AX1 4K Handycam. This'll make your home videos look spectacular.

Yep...that's a curved screen. Quite clever actually. Looks like the bods at Sony have been working overtime.

We all know how good Sony's video projectors are, so you can image our anticipation at seeing one projecting in 4K.

The all new Sony 4K VW500.

Sony had a projection room set up for visitors to pop in to and take a peek at 4K projection, I kid you not, it was spectacular!!

The VPL-VW500ES can show up to 60 frames per second in 4K. It’s the new 4K industry

standard and is much higher than the earlier 24p. The result is a smoother image with superior colour and realism.

Drawing on optical technology developed for the VPL-VW1000ES, Sony have achieved both high brightness (1,700 ANSI lumens) and high contrast (200,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio) in the VPL-VW500ES. So, you’ll see crystal-clear, bright, detail-packed images – even in well-lit rooms.

You'll go blind standing there Chromey!!

At Audio-T Manchester, we plan to demonstrate the Sony VPL-VW500 ES at some point before the end of the year. We are hoping to get our hands on a VPL-VW500ES and make a day of it. Keep an eye on our blogs for any updates.

The Sony portable audio area.

Sony also wanted to show off the new portable linear PCM audio recorder, which can also read Hi-Res DSD files.

It looks like a pretty serious piece of kit. I want one!!

Our last stop came at the home cinema area where Sony were showing off  the worlds slimmest Sound Bar?

As you can see the claim is real but does it sound any good.

Sony invited us to the dealer area again, away from the crowds and let us listen to the new HT-ST3 sound bar in a quieter room.

It's in the picture below, just in front of the TV, priced at £599.95

It's as good many other sound bars on the market...

...but with one exception. Look how slim it is!! It's shorter than Chromey.

Even Chromey was feeling quite smug. He looks positively gargantuan compared to the HT-ST3.

Ok little guy...ahem! big guy. It's time to go..

As we were leaving, even the staff on Sony stand had to say goodbye to Chromey.

Auf Wiedersehen fair lady.

Right then Chromey!! Your chariot awaits you, and British built as well. You can drive.

I need a nap!!!

The KEF R300's Rock!

Any great speaker starts with a strong inert cabinet, the R300 has just that. The R range uses a clever geometry and internal bracing which KEF quote "optimises vibrational behavior, reducing secondary radiation from cabinet walls for a cleaner sound."  Damping panels are also used to reduce cabinet resonance and colouration.

The R300 uses KEF's marvellous all new Uni-Q driver array, capable of producing a truly immersive, wide & open soundstage, that is both clean and accurate. The R300's are easy to listen to and don't fatigue your ears over long periods of time.

The R300 shares a single 165mm bass driver found in the floor standing R700's . Now to say that a single 165mm bass driver isn't enough would be a lie. The R300's sound powerful... like floor-stander powerful! I really like the simplicity of having the 3-way designed cross over that utilises each driver to play each major frequency separately (treble, mid-range, & bass). This allows the R300's to sound fast & controlled over all frequencies but particularly in the bass, rather than sacrificing definition & texture for all out bass extension.

I'm a big fan of floor standing speakers or more over a speaker that can play a  wide frequency range, particularly lower frequencies. Not just because I like bass (I do, but that's not the point). The point is I believe you obtain more realism. The R300's really hit the spot! For anyone who thinks they need floor-standers for a big sound, or if you're looking to down size from floor standing speakers & still want to hold on to that lovely bass extension, then audition the R300's . You may be pleasantly surprised.

Sony VPLHW50ES Projector Brings Home Cinema To Life

Having had the Sony VPLHW50ES projector set up and working for a couple of weeks and tried some of our trusted 2 and 3d movies, we have to say how impressed we've been with its performance.

The inital picture we got straight from the box was fantastic and what a help it was having the vertical and horizontal lense shift available on top of the unit making the final positioning a breeze, less faff more time to watch your favourite movie before getting into those little fine adjustments.

The menu screens for making those adjustments to tailor the projector for the image which best suits you are very comprehensive  and easy to follow so getting what you want could not be easier.

It has a great colour balance, excellent black levels and beautiful fine picture detail, not only that you can get all of this in a room with some low lighting on, very handy for those who are easily scared in the dark.

2d movies we tried we thought looked amazing, but going on to 3d, well this is one of the best 3d viewing experiences we've had to date, you can even make adjustments to the depth of the 3d,wow.

There are so many areas of this projector we could go on about, but 1 more thing we feel is a major benefit is the whisper quiet fan so even in the most tense, quiet moments of a movie you'll not be distracted from the action by a fan.

All this for £2799.95 and now on a special offer price of £2399. We believe this projector should be on any movie fans must have list, do yourself a favour put a couple of discs in your bag and pop in and see for yourself. Read the Sony VPLHW50ES What Hi-Fi? review here

REL's T7 Storms The Competition!

Subs, where to start... Some use downward firing drivers & others use forward firing drivers, why?

The really great thing about downward firing subs are their "coupled-to-room" sound, the ability to work with your room to create a smooth seamless presentation is fantastic. This is achieved by controlling the distance from the first boundary to the drive unit using certain height feet. In a downward firing subs case the first boundary it encounters is the floor, this makes tuning a sub easier. This also means that it can create a more constant & controlled response, Great! However it's not all good news, for those of us after all out trouser flapping & chest pounding bass, we'll need to look elsewhere.

That's where forward firing subs come in. Some people will argue that subs are omnidirectional... I disagree when it comes to a design that is forward firing. Why is it any different to a traditional pair of speakers? It's simply in most cases using a larger single driver and operating at a lower frequency range (the frequency part is what i think many people mean when it's omnidirectional, because you can still hear these larger soundwaves its okay to hide a sub away) Although you can hide a sub behind sofas etc. it's certainly not the best place to position it in my opinion. With a forward firing sub you get so much more slam & attack, which is why I believe it's important to let your sub breathe  into the room, firing across the longest length of a room eg. from corner to corner, to give it more control without booming or humming.

There are pros and cons to both designs, so why can't you have both?... Well you can. It's REL's T-7!

To be honest when I first laid eyes on the T-7 I didn't think it was going to work that well. I had preconceptions that the 8" active downward firing driver would clash with the 10" passive forward firing driver creating a mushy unfocused presentation... I was wrong, very wrong.

The REL T-7 is now amongst some of my most favoured subwoofers. The first reason for this is REL's use of both downward & forward firing drivers.

Secondly is the use of hi-fi quality power supplies, toroidal to be exact, partnered with high current Class A/B amps. These are the same types of transformers & amplifier designs being used in some of the best stereo amplifiers being made today. The use of these helps marry the sub to your speakers (if using the same power supply & amp designs in your amplifier).

Thirdly is REL's use of input filters, this is what I think has got me really hooked on REL subwoofers. Borrowed from its more expensive sibling (Serie R) the new input filters are considerably quicker than previous REL designs & many other speaker manufacturers sub designs. The signal that comes into the back panel inputs of the subwoofer then out to the drivers is lightening fast! Giving REL subwoofers the ability to start and stop fast enough for you to hear even the biggest of sub bass frequencies in movies or music with a layered, controlled & textured response. Something I can't say for all subwoofer designs.

Fourthly is REL's high level connection (for music) as well as the standard LFE RCA input (for movies). The high level connection allows for seamless integration to your speakers, not just because you are presented with volume & crossover controls separate to the LFE RCA input, but because you connect the sub to your amp via the speaker terminals (using a cable made up of x1 yellow cable-left positive, x1 red cable-right positive, and x1 black cable left & right negative) taking the lovely character of your amp to your sub as well as the speakers.

The REL T-7 ticks all the boxes. It's compact, it's fast and agile, it sounds much bigger than it looks, & it can improve music and movies like no other. In my opinion REL could charge more for performance like this, so grab one before they change their minds!

If you're in the market for a new sub I strongly urge you to audition this first.

Focal Aria 906 and 926.... Coming Soon To Audio T Southampton!

As if the excitement of our forthcoming movie isn't enough we have more thrilling news!

We are very much looking forward to the arrival of the new Focal Aria 906 and 926 speakers.

We had the pleasure of listening to these superb speakers recently and immediately knew that we had to have them! The Focal Electra range have been long term favourites of ours, so much so that both of us use them at home, and it's great to see similar elegance and build quality at more affordable price points with these new Aria models.  The hi-tech drive units incorporating flax are a revelation too. The sound is fast, very transparent and totally involving.

Follow the link below for a positive appraisal of the Aria 926.  We totally concur with Andrew Everard's description of these 'gloriously enjoyable speakers'.

We'll let you know as soon as the new Focals arrive here so you can bring in your favourite tunes and judge for yourselves. See you soon. Read the latest review of the Focal Aria from Andrew Everard here

Explicit Elicit R Integrated Amplifier And Another Winner From Rega

Rega have done it again, not content with a new cd player, amp, dac, record players and phonostage over the past couple of years, they have re-visited the Elicit amplifier to see what could be done.

The Elicit R is the result, a heavier beast at 13kg and a fresh new stlye more in keeping with the higher priced Osiris amplifier. It has plenty of inputs including a great internal phonostage on input 1, for those of you that either aren't vinyl users or already have an external phono stage, this input can be made into a line level input by use of a button to the side of the input on the rear of the amp.

It also has a full in/out recording circuit and a direct input which bypasses the pre-amp and volume stage and goes directly to the power amp stage for use in home cinema systems and finally a pre amp output, so any of you out there with the Cursa/Maia combo or perhaps other power amps this could be an opportunity to upgrade your pre amp section.

Like the Brio R it has a new power amp circuit with improved power supplies giving it an increased power output to 100 watts a channel into 8 ohms and we've not yet managed to find a speaker that it doesn't do justice to. It has a new remote with a nice clear lay out for ease of use which can be used to control all the new R size components.

When it comes to performance it more than holds its own against ampilifiers of a similar price and some costing a lot more with its well balanced Rega sound so now we are left waiting, hopefully for not much longer, for its CD stablemate the Saturn R and we're sure that this combo with a pair of Rega RS7 speakers will be a force to be reckoned with.

Treat yourself, bring in a couple of CD's or records and have a listen.
