Sennheiser gain Momentum 2.0

You may already be familiar with the original and very popular Momentum headphones from Sennheiser.

They were a great take on the broadcast industry standard HD25 but tuned for domestic use around the house or out and and about.

Now, the new Momentum 2.0 has stepped up the portable theme with the ability to fold them away and tuck into your manbag.

See!! they fold away, nice.

The new earpads are now memory foam and are covered in leather,

they are also larger then the previous cups making them much more comfortable to wear.

The headband is now a combination of memory foam and leather for comfort.

An in line remote, microphone is included for either Apple iOS or Android, depending on your preference, along with a nice carrying case.

And of course attention to detail is typically Sennheiser.

We like the new Momentum 2.0, they makes more sense now.

Most of our customers actually bought the original Momentums to use while on the move so go figure, add the fact that they are also more comfortable now and Sennheiser may have another hit on their hands.

Our set are nicely run in and are on demo at our Manchester store.

Pop over to the store and we'll plug you in.

Munir, Dave, Mike and Kev.

Chord Electronics 2Qute DAC arrives in Manchester.

The Chord Electronics 2Qute DAC !!...Chromey's really getting in to it...literally.

The 2Qute arrives at Audio-T Manchester and is entertaining us way beyond it's qute dimensions imply.

You may have already read about the Chord Hugo and the great press it has recieved, our Bristol store summed it up

nicely in their review of Hugo here. Hifi World also got there mitts on one and review it here. The Chord 2Qute DAC has some similar traits in the sound quality and you could argue that it a sounds a little bit tighter in the bass department. Everything the Hugo is good at, such as timing and detail are evident in the Qute.

A big, wide open sound stage and an openess that lends itself nicely to some of the bigger systems we have running at the store.

Gone is the headphone output, battery operation and bluetooth connection but it retains the same engine room as the Chord Hugo.

A dedicated BNC type coaxial digital input reflects it's desktop credentials.

Around the back is a "USB B" asynchronous connection for all your lush 24bit files that maybe stored on your Mac or PC.

An optical input also makes up the family of digital connections on the rear.

The beautiful case work is typical of all the products from Chord Electronics.

2 Legit 2 Qute (hey...hey...) 2 Legit 2 Quit.

It may be Qute, however, be warned!!! It punches way above its weight.

OK...so as we always say "the proof of the pudding is in the eating"...

...so come along to our store in Manchester and take the 2Qute for a spin.

***Also available at other branches of Audio T - check store for details.***

See you in store soon.

Any one for humble Pi ?

Can a raspberry Pi be used to reliably stream high quality audio ?

The Raspberry Pi.

This question really has two parts.

One, can you stream audio to the raspberry Pi reliably and without any dropouts?

Two, can you output the audio to a quality DAC maintaining the integrity of the high quality file being streamed?

The USB and ethernet ports.

I have been playing around with this part time for a couple of years and now that the Pi 2 has been released I thought I'd better write it up before it's completely out of date!

All of this has been done as an enthusiastic amateur with no real computer experience to speak of, so please don't judge me for using incorrect terminology or going about things the long way round.

The answer to part one is a resounding yes. Audio can be streamed to the Pi with no problems whatsoever. This can be done using ethernet or wi-fi, although wi-fi is obviously signal strength dependent. The wi-fi is achieved via USB.

USB wifi dongle.

There are a number of specifically designed operating systems for the Pi which allow you to do this.

At various times I have used Volumio, previously RaspyFi, and Rune Audio. I switched between these for reasons of DAC and audio card compatability.

The Runeaudio web controller.

Part two gets a little more complicated.

Audio can be passed from the Pi to a USB DAC fairly easily and there are a good selection of high quality DACs that will work out of the box.

I have tested Volumio 1.4 edition with the Rega DAC, Naim DAC-V1, Chord Hugo and the Cyrus DAC 6 and 8 amplifiers.

The ever popular Chord Hugo DAC.

There are however limitations related to how the Pi processes all this data.

The USB and Ethernet ports are processed through the same bus which means that if you are trying to stream 24bit audio into the Pi and output to a USB DAC, you may experience audio dropouts to the point that the music is unlistenable.

To resolve this issue, I would recommend using a raspberry pi audio card. Such as the HiFiBerry DIGI or the Wolfson Audio card. These connect to the Pi using the GPIO (general purpose input output) pins, not the USB and therefore you can stream high definition audio through the Pi and output through a coaxial or optical connection.

This also allows you to use non USB DACs to convert the audio.

The Wolfson audio card, installed on the Pi in a custom case.

I chose to experiment with the Wolfson card which turned out to be a small error as the drivers haven't yet been incorporated to the main raspberry pi kernel, meaning I had to use specific operating systems.

This is where Rune Audio came in very handy as they have built a kernel for the card. The HifiBerry is much better supported as the drivers have been incorporated into the main raspberry Pi kernel.

If you are hoping to use internet radio on your Pi, then I would suggest installing Squeezelite on top of whichever audio OS you have opted to boot your Pi with. This will allow you to get internet radio through Tune In, meaning that the BBC streams won't stop working at random intervals.

The Logitech Media Server Controller used for controlling Squeezelite in a web browser.

Now the important bit. Does it sound good?

The sound is quite impressive considering how it is being achieved.

However, if you compare to a proper streaming product, then there is no contest as to which sounds better. Having compared both the Naim UnitiQute 2 with the Pi + DAC-V1 and the Cyrus Stream XP2QX / 6 DAC with the Pi / 6 DAC, in my opinion the proper hifi streaming product sounds significantly better in both cases. As you would expect really.

A selection of DACs that can make the Raspberry Pi really sing.

In conclusion, I've had some fun playing with code and trying to get this to work and as a second system it really is very usable.

It is never going to replace your real hifi though.

The "Streaming Pi" in it's case.

A lot of the stuff I have used is community maintained or developed for free. If you find any of this software of use, please donate to the developers.

Chord Electronics Hugo - Portable DAC & Headphone Amplifier

Hugo a Go Go!.....everywhere and take your hi fi with you.

You may already be aware of the amazing little headphone DAC/pre-amp, The Chord Hugo.

Our Bristol store actually reviewed it in April last year. They absolutely loved it, and still do.

We also took it on as one of our high-end headphone amps and as one of our best selling headphones are the superb Sennheiser HD800's it seemed like the right choice.

This little DAC/headphone amp is simply astounding, it literally drives the Sennheiser HD800's into the ground, I mean we are talking about bags and bags of power with plenty to spare.

Hit the road DAC.

Diminutive, lighweight with high quality build, along with up to 12hrs of battery life makes the Hugo genuinely "hifi on the go"

Real RCA analogue outputs also make the Hugo an astounding preamp for connecting to conventional hifi.

Bluetooth APTx gives you the flexibility of wireless connection.

Digital co-axial and optical give the Hugo many different connection options.

The FPGA ??

The Hugo has a "field programmable gate array" which is an advanced circuit fully controlled by Chord without the limitations of third party DAC chips.

Two micro USB inputs allow for SD 44/48khz for direct connection to iPhones, Android and nearly all tablets.

The HD 44/384khz allows for asynchronous connection using Hugo's own highly accurate clock circuit. This input will support

384khz PCM/DXD and also DSD64 and DSD128 in DoP format. (very high quality audio formats)

In the natural world...

...all headphones (and Chromey) gravitate towards the Hugo.

Our Hugo is ready to demonstrate at our Manchester store.

Bring along your own headphones or try it with one of ours.

Just ask for Dave, Kevin, Munir or Mike at the store.

See you soon.

mu-so by Naim makes so much music in Manchester.

Meanwhile Manchester Makes Much Amusing Musings at the mu-so...

And what musings they are, what an amazing product !

To all those who question the abilities of "soundbars, music boxes, wireless docks or just plain old glorified ghetto blasters"...

...Naim have your answer in the mu-so. Don't believe the hype?? Think we are blowing hot air?? Not-So...

...come along to our Manchester store and take a look and listen for yourself.

The mu-so has a six speaker array driven by six digital amplifiers.

"mu-so gives so-much for so-little"

Ahh!! well said Chromey, you know, maybe you should speak to the marketing bods at Naim about that little gem.

Apart from Wifi, Bluetooth and Airplay you also get an optical, a USB and a 3.5mm analogue input.

The all metal body provides great heat dissipation, the elegant looking heat sink runs across the full length of the body.

The beautifully weighted, machined volume knob is a pleasure to use and is a nod to the gargantuan Naim Statement amplifier.

You can find more info about the mu-so here.

Please feel free to call in and ask the staff at our Manchester store for a demonstration.

Dolby Atmos arrives in Manchester.

Dolby Atmos arrives at our Audio-T store in Manchester...

...but first, here is a quick diary of our trip to Dolby Labs in Soho, London.

After a quick 2hr's and 9 min train journey from Manchester to Euston, I arrive at Dolby Europe in the heart of London.

Spot the Chrome Trooper..??

The famous Ray Dolby even has a lounge named after him. Did you know Dolby was actually founded in London in 1965.

After tea and biscuits we enter Dolby's custom built cinema.

In all honesty, from personal point of view, I think its probably the best cinema sound I have ever heard.

Dolby Atmos creates an "atmosphere" around you that simply envelopes you and pulls you into what is happening on screen

as well as letting you know what is happening off screen. Truly convincing, Clever stuff!

More so than anything else out there, á la DSP modes found on most surround amplifiers.

The exclusive movie clips that were played to us demonstrates exactly why there is such excitement around this great new format.

Chromey actually got his own private viewing...show off!!

And now!! how to bring this wonderful format to the home, well...

...introducing the all new Pioneer SC-LX88 Dolby Atmos enabled surround receiver.

It's coming back with me, to Manchester.

Fast forward a couple of weeks and back in Manchester we are up and running with our KEF in ceiling CI160 QR.

We have 4 of these installed in the ceiling, giving us the true Dolby Atmos experience.

Our configuration is a true 7.1.4 or a 5.1.4 speaker setup. Click on the links to be directed to Dolby's website.

Our ever faithful KEF R Series make up the fronts and rears in our set up.

The most excellent Sony VPL-HW55ES projetor takes care of our video duties.

Et voila!! The brand new Pioneer SC-LX88 and Pioneer BDP-LX58 now sit proudly in our demo room working their magic with Dolby Atmos.

Pioneer have gone back to their high end roots with the beautifully built BDP-LX58.

We were also given some dedicated and exclusive footage by Dolby for use in our Dolby Atmos demo room.

Dolby's Silent animated short was made exclusively for Dolby to demonstrate the new Dolby Atmos format.

It's great fun and it's definitely worth popping in to experience it.

There are several Dolby Atmos clips to get your teeth into.

And some informative shorts telling you about how the whole "object based software" helps the Dolby engineers

to get the mix just right.

This is how Dolby explain it on their website.

Here is a small excerpt.

"The limits of channel-based audio"

There’s no question that channel-based audio can produce great sound. But the format is fundamentally limited because it is created to play back on a specific type of speaker arrangement and doesn’t have the necessary information to deliver a fuller, richer sound if you expand your system.

If a movie is mixed in 5.1, for instance, it has just the information it needs to play back to five speakers, set in predefined locations, and one subwoofer. There’s no point in adding more speakers because the 5.1 mix doesn’t know what to do with them. If you don’t place your speakers in the “right” locations, your movies won’t sound quite right.

The fact that it’s object based makes Dolby Atmos much more adaptable because it’s not locked to a certain number of speakers. Instead, the object-based nature of Dolby Atmos gives the soundtrack a wealth of data about the sound in a scene.

In Dolby Atmos, each sound in a movie scene—a gunshot or a woman’s scream, for instance—can be an object. Filmmakers can precisely specify where those sound objects should originate and how they should move.

So there you have it, the rest, as they say, is down to you popping into Audio-T Manchester and trying it out for yourself.

Munir (me), Mike, Kevin and Dave will be on hand to give you a demonstration of Dolby Atmos,

in what we believe is the only store in Manchester to have true Dolby Atmos up and running.

See you soon.

An afternoon of 4K delight with Sony.

When Sony invited Audio-T along to Sony Music in Kensington to introduce us to the stunning new 4K VPLHW300ES 3D projector. I got the opportunity to attend.

So a quick walk to Manchester Piccadilly Train station and 2 hrs 9 mins later I’m at London Euston.

A couple of underground stations later and I’m at 99 Kensington High street outside Sony Music. Easy, who needs HS2.

The folks at Sony kicked off the proceedings with a demo of this year’s world cup, where Sony’s own dedicated native 4K broadcast cameras were used for filming, the footage is simply stunning and shown through the 300es it is genuinely jaw dropping. The last time I saw anything as good was through the 500es in our demo room in Manchester and apart from a clearly brighter image from the 500es the 300 holds its own in every other aspect of picture quality. Truly impressive.

Next up was a clip of concert footage from Muse. Once again, the 4K 300es deals with black level and detail with aplomb. Muse always seem to use at lot of purples and violets during their concerts and against dark backgrounds the Sony just picks out the detail with ease and the colours almost start to drip off the screen. I really, really want one.

Finally, and in my opinion most importantly we were shown a regular blu-ray disc to show off the upscaling capabilities of Sony’s digital reality creation (DRC).

Well, I have to admit I was blown away with DRC’s ability to resolve even more detail from blu-ray, while at the same time not having any adverse effect on the colours or sharpness.

So, in reality, this means that all of your old Blu-ray collection (and mine) will get a new lease of life just by scaling it through the 300es. Happy days!! I love this job and the VPL-VW300ES.

The Sony 300ES has the same case size as the 500ES.

For more information on new Sony VPL-VW300ES please follow the links below.

You can also contact the guys at Audio-T Manchester or pop in and pick up a dedicated brochure on the Sony 4K range of projectors.

Introducing the Simple Roomplayer with Amp.

"Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication"  Leonardo da Vinci

Well, we are in full aggreement with old Leo's now famous quote, especially in regards to the Simple Roomplayers.

Our Simple Roomplayer with Amp has been playing in it's own little space on the shop floor and much to the delight of our customers, it's not let us down yet.

Using Deezer's streaming service has opened up endless possibilities of mixing up musical genres, it gives us an opportunity to put the amps in the Roomplayer through it's paces.

From Jazz to Hip-Hop and Folk to Americana even movie soundtracks and classical music the room player has impressed us on how it just seems to control the speakers with ease.

Hooking up a pair of reasonably difficult to drive Monitor Audio GX50 bookshelf/standmount speakers and the Simple Roomplayer with Amp just plays music.  The ribbon tweeter on GX50's likes to be driven hard with lots of power and yet the seemingly modest 50 watts (4 ohm) on the roomplayer doesn't flinch, playing loud when needed and still presenting the music with detail and space.

Other "all in one" network streamers of the same ilk, albeit cheaper in price, tend to harden up when pushed and get a little shouty at higher volumes, not so with the Simple Roomplayer.

This is probably because careful attention to design detail keeps all signal paths as short and as direct as possible. This guarantees the highest audio quality with no interference from any other circuitry. We like.

All your music at your fingertips.

Roomplayer apps for your computer, iPad, iPod or iPhone give you a unique view of all your music.

Control what music is playing on any Roomplayer in your home. Create playlists, add music to queues, browse music on streaming services, select radio stations and more.

There is also an Android app in the the works and should be with us shortly.

Made from premium grade aluminium and tempered glass, the Roomplayer not only looks great, it provides fantastic screening and heatsink capabilities.

You can pop into our Manchester store and listen to the Simple Roomplayer right now.

Give any of us shout when you call in, we will be more than happy to help.

Oh..that's Kevin,Mike, Dave or Munir.

In the meantime why not check out some glowing reviews by HiFi Choice and HiFi World here and here

PMC Twenty 26 now demonstrating at Audio T Manchester.

The latest edition to the award winning Twenty series...

...and as soon as Chromey puts the link bar back, we can continue...ahem..with the blog...thank you.

The pinnacle of the Twenty Series...

The Twenty 26

A quick quote from PMC...

...the Twenty 26 delivers finesse, delicacy and musicality...

The Twenty series tweeter (above) is the only remaining component from rest of the Twenty series and rightly so because we love how the 21,22,23 and 24's perform.

There is however, a brand new mid range unit (below) and an all new bass driver.

This quote from PMC makes absolute sense as regards to the new mid range unit and bass unit combined.

"an added ability to convey huge dynamic impact and the sheer scale of any musical performance"

Hmmmm...twin exit ports for the transmission line?? Read on.

Due to the high pressure transmission line within the Twenty 26 they use a larger exit to avoid turbulence and unlike ported enclosures the ATL produces a wide range of frequencies picking up from where the bass driver rolls off all the way down to 25hz.

You can clearly hear this in action as the Twenty 26 can pressurize our large shop floor area with ease.

I mean these speakers are seriously good fun and we intend to prove that at our next Classic Album Evening on the 9th September, yes that's right, the new Twenty 26's  will be our speaker of choice for our 2nd Classic Album Evening. (please be aware though, seating will be limited so book early)

We intend to furnish our readers with a little more information on how the PMC 26's sound over the coming months so watch this space for any updates on how they hold up with

some of our Rega, Naim and Linn amplifiers. Happy days!!!

Our PMC Twenty 26's are in the store now and playing.

Come along and ask a member of staff for a demo.

Just a quick message to say thanks for
another excellent evening.  It was great to be able to hear
the new PMCs - they are such a natural and involving
sounding speaker - and it has certainly given me aspirations
to eventually own at least a pair of Twenty 21s.  Nice
choice of album too, and love the fact that you played
'Solid Air' after the Nick Drake.  Danny
Thompson's bass playing really came through well!
