Audio-Technica ATH-A990Z Headphones Now On Demonstration At Audio T Enfield

We have just taken delivery of the Audio-Technica ATH-A990Z ART Monitor on ear Headphones.

Visually the ATH-A990Z are excellent, the lightweight green aluminium housing looks and feels like quality craftsmanship.

The ATH-A990Z's feature a "3D wing support" which Audio-Technica claim that provides a great fit and long-wearing comfort. I couldn't of put it better myself, they are certainly one of the most comfortable sets of headphones I have tried.

Here you can see the premium, soft ear pads for a comfortable fit.

The ATH-A990Z feature a 3.0m cloth-wrapped tangle-free cable. Also the 6.3" jack screws onto the 3.5mm jack, which I thought was a nice touch.

Every 53mm driver is hand-assembled in Japan for highly reliable performance. The yoke magnetic component contributes to the high-resolution audio reproduction with its superior transient response. OFC bobbin-wound voice coils enable efficient signal transfer. The top-mounted PCB contributes to smoother airflow for precise diaphragm movement.

The one thing that surprised me the most about the ATH-A990Z is how open and airy they sound considering they are a closed-back design. Audio-Technica have created what they call a Double Air Damping System (D.A.D.S.) structure which they claim provides deep bass reproduction. In my opinion it does more than this, by giving a more "open-backed" performance, rather than a "bloated" or "closed" sound.

For me the Audio-Technica ATH-A990Z does nothing wrong. The comfort is amazing and the sound defines its closed-back design. For £199 I've not found any better.

In our HiFi room will we be running through the A29, A39 & A49 amplifiers & using the CDS27 as our source.

Which will be accompanied by a range of truly wonderful KEF loudspeakers including Blades!

In our AV room we will be using the KEF R series to create a 5.1.2 Dolby Atmos configuration.

Which will be driven by Arcam's fantastic AV amp range. The UDP411, SoloMusic, AVR550 & AVR850 will be used on rotation over the 2 days.

Join us and come and have a listen to Denon and Marantz multi-channel Home Cinema and two-channel stereo Hi-Fi systems on Friday 21st & Saturday 22nd of October.

REL T Series Ti Subwoofers Get Even Better

REL builds on the already solid T range which brings us to the Ti series. The line up consists of 3 new models, the T5i, the T7i & the T9i.

Both 8" and 10" bass engines have been redesigned using a AlloyFibre driver, not only is this lighter, but stiffer than its predecessor. As a result the cabinets have been made stronger to allow the more powerful engines to work without colouration. The active driver on the T7i & T9i are now forward firing, which gives even greater punch and agility.

The new range uses workhorse Class A/B amp designs coupled to REL's lightening fast signal filters allowing them to integrate seamlessly into any Hi-Fi or Home theatre system.

To make installation even easier the Ti series can be upgraded to become wireless using REL's own Arrow wireless system, meaning only a power cable is needed to connect to the back of the sub.

The Ti series offers greater depth with even tighter control over its predecessor (the T series) and even greater improvements can be heard when compared to alternative brands.

Russell K does many things differently, unlike most speaker designs Russell K chooses to use no internal dampening and thin cabinet walls with internal bracing shelves instead of a more commonly used thick MDF body with lots of internal dampening. The crossover circuit is particularly interesting, in that it uses only a single coil on the mid/bass driver and a single capacitor in line with the tweeter. All of which creates a sonic performance like no other.

Russell K RED 50

The range starts with the RED 50 bookshelf speakers pictured above, which uses a 5" bass/mid driver & 25mm soft dome tweeter. The sound is unique, without coloration & transparent which allows the speaker to truly disappear. A must on anyone's audition list, for £1,000 high quality small bookshelf speakers.

Russell K RED 100

The RED 100 standmount speaker pictured above follows, which uses a bigger 6.5" bass/mid driver but shares the same 25mm tweeter, it also features a forward firing bass port which helps with speaker placement close to rear walls & helps to produce an even tighter bass response. The RED 100 builds on what the RED 50 already achieves, a bigger more effortless presentation is unlocked with the RED 100.

Rega Planar 2 Returns

The Rega Planar 2 returns to Rega's turntable lineup and it's looking and sounding good.

The Planar 2 is made up of a light weight acrylic laminated plinth which is available in gloss black or gloss white finishes, which features a hidden power switch underneath. The plinth is then supported by newly designed rubber feet to isolate and help prevent unwanted vibrations traveling through the turntable.

The motor, hub bearing assembly and platter are all new designs. A low noise 24v motor, a 11mm self securing brass bearing assembly and a 10mm float glass platter ensure a very smooth operation.

The tonearm used is the new Rega RB220 pre fitted with the Rega Carbon MM Cartridge. An aluminium tube is used which incorporates new zero play ball bearings and an automatic bias feature, making it not only sound fantastic but easy to setup too.

The Debut Carbon Esprit SB offers unrivalled performance and versatility at its price point and is often referred to as the audiophile "best buy" 3-speed turntable.

High quality music streaming with Naim's UnitiServe!

The Naim UnitiServe rips, stores & plays all of your favourites.

Ripping on to the UnitiServe couldn't be much simpler, insert your CD & wait, ripping can be monitored using the n-serve app (pictured below). Once it has finished the CD is automatically ejected. On rare occasions the album artwork can be incorrect, however simply edit using the n-serve app by pressing "edit" then "change cover".

Storing HD music bought online or any other music not ripped by the UnitiServe, is achieved by copying and pasting into the UnitiServe's downloads folder.

Playing back your music using just the UnitiServe requires a DAC or an amp with digital inputs. Once you have this in place simply press play using the n-serve app to enjoy all of your music. Please note further improvements can be made if Naim's ND5 XS, NDX, or NDS network players are used to playback your music.

The importance of any streaming system begins at the source. Where are you storing your music? We conducted a simple test of ripping a CD to the UnitiServe then we listened, verses copying the same ripped album by the UnitiServe onto a cheaper alternative NAS (plugged in via a switch) and then played back using the UnitiServe.

Surprisingly the results were quite different, playing back the music from the UnitiServe's internal hard drive appeared smoother, cleaner & more rhythmic, despite the music being identical in quality and ripped by the same disk drive. In some ways most NAS drives are the CD Transports of the streaming world. Get it right. Get a Naim server.

Arcam's 40 years of audio engineering knowledge gives birth to a new ground breaking amplifier design. We are very pleased to introduce the Arcam A39 two channel stereo integrated amplifier!

The A39 is equipped with 2 pairs of speaker outputs, a MM phono stage, 6 phono inputs, a 3.5mm aux input, a 6v accessory power output (rSeries products), headphone amplifier, record output & a pre out.

The A39 sets new standards of clean & distortion free audio, making the competition sound "masked" or "veiled" in comparison. This is largely down to the 120 watt Class G amplifier inside. The most interesting part of the A39 amplifier design is that the first 20 watts is pure Class A, while the remaining 100 watts is in Class AB.
