New Rega Ania Moving Coil Cartridge →

Rega have been pushing the boundaries of cartridge design for a good number of years, and none more so than the moving coil type.

The Rega Apheta was the first of these in 2005, and that was re-worked and improved when the Apheta 2 was introduced in 2014. The top of the range Aphelion followed in 2015 and demonstrated just how far Rega had progressed the design and manufacture in this highly specialised discipline.

All these turntable cartridges are manufactured by Rega at their UK facility in Southend-on-Sea which is quite an accomplishment.

The Ania is the new addition to the moving coil range which opens up ownership due to the wider compatibility with tonearms and turntables, and of course its price, which offers great value and exceptional sound for the money.

Indeed the Rega Planar 3 combines very well with the Ania, and as you go up through the Rega turntable range greater musical delights become apparent.

Rega moving coil cartridges are the low output type and require a moving coil phono stage. It just so happens that Rega are also introducing the Fono MC that is an obvious partner, although other MC stages will work.

The newly announced Rega Planar 6 completes the perfect package of Planar 6 (inc Neo PSU), the Ania MC cartridge and the recently released Fono MC stage.

The Ania and Fono MC are already the beneficiaries of a fine review by Jason Kennedy in the-ear.net where he extols the virtue of their performance partnered with the Rega RP8 turntable.

We have the Ania, Apheta 2 and Aphelion on demonstration and expect the Fono MC in mid July and the new Planar 6 around the end of July.

Denon have come up trumps once again with the new DM41 Micro System. It has long been a Denon strength and the new model proves to be a winner as we would expect.

Now with Bluetooth connectivity as well as CD replay, DAB/DAB+ and FM radio, analogue and two optical digital inputs, which can be connected up to improve the sound of your TV!

Matched with suitable speakers from Rega, Dynaudio, B&W or Q Acoustics etc. it offers quite surprising results.

ProAc Loudspeakers Now Available At Audio T Brighton

We are really pleased to have added ProAc loudspeakers to our portfolio. A very well respected manufacturer with decades of experience in loudspeaker design.

They are well made and nicely finished, and sound rather good too, suiting all styles of music and presentation.

Proac Tablette 10 Maple

The Tablette 10 is the tenth generation Tablette and begins the range with an excellent small sealed box loudspeaker, that is suited to positioning close to a wall.

The same dimensions as the classic BBC LS3/5A and Linn Kan models of the past, the Tablette 10 is a fine, communicative performer.

Proac Response DB3 Oak

The Response DB3 is the next model we have on demonstration. This new loudspeaker is a stand mounter that needs a bit of space around it to give a nicely balanced result. Capable of a big sound from a compact size.

Proac Response D2 Ebony

The Response D2 is another stand mount design, a bit bigger and rather more able.

The Response D20R is an updated D20 and utilises the ProAc ribbon tweeter that the more upmarket Proac speakers use. 

This floorstander is refined and capable, and we hope to have the Response D30RS alongside soon.

Tiger Paw Tranquility Linn LP12 Turntable Bearing Upgrade

As the saying goes good things often come in small packages and in this instance they are not wrong! Yesterday a small cardboard box measuring 20cm x13cm x7cm found its way into our shop from Tiger Paw.  It was with some excitement, after reading lots of good things about it, that we opened it to reveal two metal discs with a unique array of rare earth magnets in them.

There is nothing new about about magnetic levitation in fact it is used by some other small exotic turntable manufacturers and has been on the news recently showing a floating platter, in fact we can remember this technology dating back to the Pickering Gyropoise from the early 1960s'.In this instance, though, it doesn't actually raise the inner platter from its thrust pad but it does dramatically reduce the force and friction between the two surfaces by up to 90%.

Another major advantage of this upgrade is the fact that no changes to the original turntable are required and the 2 sections fit around the existing bearing spindle and inner platter with no screws or bolts required. It is also fully backwards compatible with pre Cirkus bearings and standard sub chassis, so no matter what level of LP12 you have everyone can benefit.

We started our listening test with Bjorks' early Gling Glow album, a close miked and slightly forward recording, and straight from the off the differences weren't small, in fact, it was dramatic, the control on the bass, unveiling of the top end and the drop of the noise floor all contributing to an overall spatial effect creating a more natural feel to the tracks, less like a record more of an experience. Record after record went on everything from the newly re-issued Paul Weller Wild Wood all the way back to lesser well recorded albums such as the The Allman Brothers live A&R studios recording from 1971. Whilst it can't make a bad recording great, they can become a whole lot more believable meaning you can just relax and listen to the music rather than getting hung up with the limitations of the recording.

It Will All Become Clear When You Hear The Focal Elear!

We recently had a Naim open day showing the new Naim Uniti range and they also bought along for the day the new Focal Headphones, the Utopia and the Elear.

We had a demonstration pair of the Elear Headphone to have a proper listen to and get a feel for what this £800 headphone can do.

First things first, these headphones are extremely comfortable and considering their size they just feel right. The cable fitted is long enough to let you kick back in your favourite chair and drift relaxingly away to your favourite tunes.

The proof of the pudding as they say is in the eating! These are a semi open design and as such have a very open and detailed presentation, with a good balance across the frequency range not over emphasising any particular part of the performance, they just boogie.

Having tried lots of different music I found them very much to my taste, two things I thought. Could I live with these.....yes I could and is there anything better I've heard....yes there is the Focal Utopia, but at £3,000 I'd have to keep my children sweeping chimneys for another 10 years.

Brand new case design.
The Brio has a completely new case to house its improved circuits and parts. It now sits in a fully aluminium two-part case which boosts the Brio’s heatsinking capabilities and improves on Rega’s already solid build quality and reliability. The sleek and minimal look was designed to bring elegance to Rega’s classic style but still harks back to the swooped features hidden away in Rega’s past amplifiers.

Re-designed circuit.
Key improvements have been made to the circuits. The PCB layout has been fully upgraded to handle higher specifications for all critical parts.

A second raw power supply has been added to provide further isolation between output stage and the driver stage/line and phono amplifiers.This improves the isolation between high and low level signal stages of the amplifier. Higher specification MUSES operational amplifiers have been used in the line and phono amplifier.

Headphone Socket.
For convenience, the Brio has the capability to drive standard hi-fi headphones from the internal amplifier. Adding a headphone socket was only possible by finding a way to reduce its impact on the main signal path so it doesn’t disrupt the overall sound quality. We have paid special attention to the switch that deactivates the main speakers. This is achieved by the same relay used in Rega’s other amplifier models.

Neat Iota Alpha, It Appears Good Things Do Come In Small Packages

We had been waiting to get our hands on a pair of these since the Sound & Vision, The Bristol Show in February, we knew they were small but when they arrived....it was oh! That small!

We should have guessed really as we have stocked and sold the diminutive Iota, a great performer for anyone that has a small  space and hooked up with something like the Naim Unitilte makes for a great all in one system.

Once we had run this pair in for a week we hooked them up to a Naim Superuniti to see what they could do, and we weren't disappointed, these are a very musical speaker and despite their small size the addition of the downward firing bass driver below, they can certainly fill a decent size room, whether it's a string quartet or dub reggae that's your bag... these will get your toes a tapping.

Like its smaller brother this speaker uses a ribbon tweeter and bass/mid driver, these are positioned on the front of the speaker at the top and are angled upwards helping to project the sound up into  the room from such a low floor standing speaker.

As mentioned earlier this is now all underpinned by a downward facing bass driver and some large floor spikes to lift the driver to the required height for getting a tuneful and rhythmic bass output which once positioned correctly for the room is in no way woolly or boomy.

These really are a great speaker, writing this and listening to some great music on them using  a Naim CD5xs and Naitxs2 they are still growing on me even more, and for anyone who has a problem with big floorstanding speakers dominating their living room or for those who love music but would like something discreet these are the boys or gals!

New Rega Planar 1 2 & 3 Set The Benchmark For Entry And Mid Priced Turntables

New revised Rega Planar turntables are setting the standard for other manufacturers to follow. The most recent addition is the all new Rega Planar 1 inc Rega Carbon cartridge £248, joining the Rega Planar 2 also with Rega Carbon cartridge £375, and the Rega Planar 3 inc Rega Elys cartridge £625 or excluding cartridge £550.

All three Planar models have been thoroughly reworked, and set new performance levels at their price points. Available in either a gloss black or gloss white plinth they look pretty fabulous too! The red mat is an optional extra.

Just come along to Audio T Brighton with a favourite record or two and have a listen. Make  comparisons between them, and understand just how crucial the record player is in the great scheme of enjoying your music played on vinyl. It is vital, as once the signal leaves the record player that is what you get. So make sure you audition thoroughly to ensure you get the performance and sound you're looking for.

Buy the best you can realistically afford and then sit back and really start enjoying your music. It could be a real ear opener as a better record player can often give you what seems to be an entirely new record collection when you revisit the music and albums you thought you knew well. There is a lot of music in those grooves!
