Arcam have now released their new A29 stereo amplifier. This new amp completes the range of integrated stereo amplifiers available from Arcam consisting of the A19 , A29 , A39, A49.

The new A29 boasts an impressive 80w p/c into 8 ohms or 175w p/c into 4 ohms. It does this using class G amplification which makes the amplifier highly efficient while still maintaining exceptionally low levels of distortion.

 

 

We have put it through its paces and in no way does it disappoint, pitched at £995 it will definitely have other manufacturers looking over their shoulders.

The Audioquest Nighthawk Headphones have arrived

We've just taken delivery of the new Audioquest Nighthawk headphones for demonstration.

They are crammed full of high technology and beautifully presented in sumptious packaging.

Even the leather case has a tooled logo

 and the headphones are securely nestled inside

They come with two leads, one of an exceptionally high quality as we would expect from Audioquest, and one which is more suited to repeated coiling and travel use.

With earcups made from "liquid wood" and biocellulose drivers there's more than a nod to the organic world, but this is coupled with the forefront of modern technology and materials, including a 3D printed component in the biomimetic grille!

So how do they sound?

Well the simple answer is vanishingly beautiful. They are very very natural, and don't seem to impose too much character of their own on the soundstage. Lovely controlled bass and very sweet treble combine to make a relaxing and revealing listening experience.

Musical Fidelity Merlin System so good we put it in the window!

Musical Fidelity have come up trumps with this little system. With vinyl sales increasing daily this is a perfect way to have a compact multi format starter system with real quality for only £1300

The individual components are available separately, but there is a price saving of £200 if bought as a system.

 

 

The system comprises the Roundtable turntable, the Merlin amplifier, and the Merlin loudspeakers.

 

As you can see the turntable is beautifully built, comes complete with an Audo Technica Cartridge, and sounds really good, it has some clever design features which all add to the aound quality, like placing the units centre of gravity at the bearing.

The little Merlin amplifier really punches above its weight, both in sound quality and available features.

There's a reason why Musical Fidelity call this a "multi format system" not only does the amplifier have a quality phono input, it also has 24/192 DACs built in, AptX bluetooth, quality headphone amp, and an ADC so that you can convert the vinyl signal for ripping......Oh and it makes a really good sound too

 

 

Last but not least are the little (yes that word crops up a lot with this system) Merlin Speakers, they have a sculpted baffle, which you can see here behind the grille, which produces a very wide dispersion soundfield making the system sound much bigger than would be expected. It is a truly surprising performance from such a small enclosure.

 

All in all this system sounds great, looks great, and most importantly is fun to listen to: so get up in your loft, rescue those old LPs and get yourself a Merlin system.

Record Store Day 2015

Its nearly that time of year again when we can get our hands on some nice limited edition vinyl.

Saturday April 18th marks the annual return of Record Store Day, a day when we can celebrate and support our local independent record shops. Many artists from every genre have recorded music only to be released on this day and usually they are limited to small numbers. There will be new releases and re-releases, pretty much something for every vinyl collector.

 

This year record store day is being sponsored by British Hi-Fi manufacturers Rega. Rega make a wide range of top quality Hi-Fi products and are famously know for their quality turntables. To help promote this event Rega will be releasing a limited edition “Record Store Day” Turntable. Only 500 have been made and are available from a handful of dealers in the UK including Audio-T. If that isn’t enough 12 of the 500 turntables have been signed by world famous artists like Mark Knopfler , Chrissie Hynde and Royal Blood to name but a few.

 

 

Preston’s independent record shop is Action Records on Church St and will be participating once again with Record Store Day. Be sure to get there early as there will be a pretty long queue. When you have been to Action Records come and see us at Audio-T and we will be happy to give it a spin.

 

We will have the Record Store Day turntables for sale on the day, and we also stock the Rega RP1, RP3 , RP6 and RP8

More Glowing Delights thanks to Ming Da

Following on from the Unson Research Sinfonia we now have the Ming Da Dynasty Cadenza Grande warming up (in) the dem room

 

This is a true beast of a valve integrated amplifier switchable between 110W in ultra-linear mode and 50W in triode operation.

 

 

Using KT120 output valves and equipped with a remote control and wonderful retro VU metres this amp will drive almost any speaker. And it sounds magnificent. We've had it running with the new B&W CM10 S2 which is a very happy combination, the soundstaging is expansive and the detail and resolution superb. 

 

there is a cover for the valves in perspex should there be any equiring fingers, or paws, that need to be kept safe, and also options for an internal DAC and for electronic bias control. Oh and it weighs a ton!

Definitely one to hear, so try to pop in while we have it here.

There's a glow in the Dem Room coming from the Unison Research

/

We've just been loaned the Unison Research Sinfonia valve integrated amplifier for a few days

Of course we couldn't wait to get this beauty out of the box and running

In the dem room with the  Michell Gyro SE, Orotofon Quintet Bronze, Project Phono Box RS and powering Focal Electra 1028Be speakers it sounds just glorious!

The Sinfonia is a dual mono, single ended output amplifier running at 25W output and provided the speakers are relatively efficient you're not going to want for volume or power

 

Just a few more pics to impress and of course Boswell had to get in on the act, plus the transformers are nice and warm!!

 

 

Just  a pity I can't get a good picture of that beguiling glow!!

The Times they are a Changin'

From the 1st of February we will be changing our opening hours

The late night on Thursday will be no more, and we will be opening from 9.30am to 5.30pm Tuesday-Saturday

Of course everything else will remain the same and we will have new delights arriving to tempt you over the next few weeks including the new CDS27 from Arcam ... a streaming CD player which works beautifully with the A19 and A39

Focal Dimension Soundbar...Sale Still On

We have just finished setting up the Focal Dimension soundbar,and have to say we are more than impressed with its performance,even without a subwoofer.

We have opted to wall mount the speaker using the supplied bracket and it looks great

The Dimension can be operated from the front facia with a touch screen which is activated with a wave of your hand,or with an optional bluetooth aptx can be operated with a smart phone or tablet.

Cocktail Audio becomes Nova Fidelity

/

We fell in love with the Cocktail Audio products last year for their versatility and quality, now the company has changed its name to Nova Fidelity and have produced two new models. The little X10 has been replaced by the X12 with improved connections on the back and a disc tray rather than a slot loader, with improved performance all round this is going to be a litle star.

But the model which has excited us the most is the new X40, a source component without amplifier which can be slotted in to any existing system. It has all the great features of the Nova Fidelity range with some new refinements, the graphic interface is improved, there are XLR connections on the rear along with a phono stage. This will allow you to record your vinyl straight to its hard drive. I can also be used as a pre-amp and connected directly to a power amp.

 

There is also FM radio on board which can also be recorded direct to the hard drive (different sizes of drive are available) and an HDMI connection so you can see its display on a TV

The best thing is it sounds great! We've been playing it into the little Audiolab M40 power amp and having fun with it.

 

 

 

So the year looks like its starting off with a bang, with this product and exciting developments from Naim with the addition of Bluetooth and Spotify to their Uniti products....and of course the wonderful Mu-So
